Brasla in winter . Photo by Campo, 2001..
Brasla (length 68 km, slope 65 m, basin 544 square km) starts between lakes Katvaru and Rāķis not far from Limbaži in Pociems surroundings. Until Jugla outfall Brasla is a calm low-land river. Head-waters flow through low-land swampy meadows and only near village Straupe forms deeper alley, uncovering first rusty sandstone outcrops. In direction of lower reaches slope of river increases, increases also number of many viewable rocks on it's banks. Brasla is scenically rich river.
Although Brasla has quite big runoff basin, it lacks water in summer and is usable by tourists only after lasting rains and, of course in spring and autumn. Standard route starts in Straupe or Plācis and ends in Sigulda (outfall + 14 km by Gauja), however in high water it is possible to start considerably upstream, even from Umurga.
Starting from Riga – Valmiera highroad bridge there is a flush before Brasla hydro electric station (right there is also a fish hatchery). Hydro electric station is renovated, it's pool is very large. After the dam river is shallow and stony, however sandstone outcrops appear in every other slew of the river.
