Length of Salaca is 96 km, slope of the river in section from Burtnieku lake to the sea – 40 m. Basin area is 3420 sq.km. Salaca is rich in water and proper for tourism all season long. Flow of the river is irregular. Upper course in section and further – until Mērnieki is dominated by calm flow and flat-water sections. In lower reaches river becomes more swifter, small stony riffles appear (see profile lengthwise diagram on the right). The most serious obstacle along route are remains of ex Mērnieku mill dam.
Travel along Salaca is recommended starting from Burtnieki. If there is a lack of leisure time, trip can be started in Vecate or Mazsalaca. Duration of trip from Burtnieki – 6–8 days, from Mazsalaca – 3–5 days, depending on type of boat. It is possible to go on shorter routes – there are also one, two and three days routes in Campo offered list. For details see route descriptions.
Trip along Salaca can be expanded by running largest rivers that fall into Burtnieki lake – Rūja, Seda or Briede.
